The Waiver Wire: Week 14 Playoff Edition
Welcome to the Playoffs! I hope that if you are reading this it means you have been able to navigate the twists and turns of the regular season, avoid serious injury, and used the waiver wire to your advantage on your way into the playoffs. The regular season is behind us for most of you but for a small group of poor fantasy owners, week 14 marks the finish line of your regular season.
Week 13 didn’t do many of us any favors as we saw Chris Godwin, Jaron Brown, Chase Edmonds, Jared Cook, Zay Jones, Dante Pettis, and Nick Mullens all finish in the top 25 in scoring. AB & Keenan Allen owners loved Sunday night, while Tarik Cohen and Travis Kelce took home overall top spots for their respected positions. On top of some out of nowhere performances, we had a few major injuries in week 13 that will impact the fantasy playoffs. So before we jump into who the top players to pick up are let’s first take a look at the key injuries that occurred in week 13:
- A.J. Green: Out for the rest of the season w/ a Big Toe Injury
- Greg Olsen: Out for the rest of the season w/ a torn plantar fascia
- James Conner: Suffers a leg contusion. His status is day to day
- Colt McCoy: Suffered a leg injury. No word on the severity of the injury
- Matt Breida: Re-Injured his ankle and is currently week to week
Now onto the top Waiver Wire pickups for this playoff edition of week 14!
As a disclaimer, all players must be owned by less than 60% of ESPN or Yahoo leagues. Ownership percentages are in parenthesizes. Below I have ranked the top 3 adds at each position with a bonus player or two sprinkled in throughout.
Lamar Jackson (ESPN 51% / Yaho0 46%)
Lamar Jackson has a lead you to the championship game schedule with the upside to go and win you the whole damn thing! With KC (5th most pts 20.68) this week and TB in WK15 (3rd most pts 22.08) Jackson not only will able to show off his blazing speed but his rocket for an arm as well. KC is giving up the most yards per game to QBs over 320 yds and TB is just under 300 p/gm. Run Run Jackson ’cause I’m reelin’ like a merry-go-round!
Jameis Winston (ESPN 63% / Yahoo 57%)
Since returning as the Buccaneers starting QB, Winston has thrown for 760 yards, 6 TDs, and has only 1 Int. Winston hasn’t thrown an interception in two straight games and is averaging just over 34 pass attempts an outing. With NO’s on deck a team that is giving up 22.2 pts to QBs each week and over 300 yds passing on average. Winston looks to be in line for yet another QB1 finish.
Josh Allen (ESPN 3% / Yahoo 5%)
With back to back QB1 performances and 234 yards on the ground over the last two weeks (Lamar Jackson is 2nd w/ 146 yds) Allen is making a strong case to not only be rostered but started this week! The Jets give up 282 yds & 2 Tds to Mariota last week as well as 43 yds on the ground.
Jaylen Samuels (ESPN 3% / Yahoo 9%)
James Conner went down with a lower leg injury and on that same drive, Samuels impact was immediately made as he took a crossing route inside the red zone to the house. He showed speed to the edge as well as pass-catching skills in that one play. The Steelers backfield is a gold mine and even if Conners injury isn’t multi-game serious, Samuels needs to be added just in case Conner can’t suit up in week 14.
In deeper leagues, you should look to add Steven Ridley if Jaylen Samuels is already taken. Ridley is owned in less than 1% of leagues across both platforms.
Justin Jackson (ESPN 12% / Yahoo 23%)
Jackson 22% of the snap share but was able to pile up 82 yds on 9 touches! He also was able to find the end zone in a drive that may have given him the starting job until Melvin Gordon comes back. His wk 14 opponent is CIN! The Bengals are giving up 118.7 yds per game on the ground and give up the 2nd most fantasy pts to the RB position (29.51). Lindsay vs CIN last week, 20 touches, 159 yds, and 2 TDs. Get him and fire him up in the playoffs!
Jeff Wilson Jr. (ESPN 0% / Yahoo 2%)
With the injury to Matt Breida, Jeff Wilson handled 72% of the snap share, 23 touches, and 134 yds from scrimmage. Matt Breida has already been ruled out for week 14, Raheem Mostert is on IR, and Alfred Morris was a healthy scratch last week. The 49ers look to be rolling into week 14 with Jeff Wilson Jr. as their #1 RB.
Chris Godwin (ESPN 47% / Yahoo 46%)
Saw an 80% snap share for the first time all year and exploded when given more time on the field. Versus the Panthers Godwin took his 80% snap share and turned it into a 6/5/101/1 line. This Goodwin’s 2nd 100-yard receiving game in his past 4 and his most targets since week 10. We talked about NO above with Winston and they are not much better vs WRs as they are giving up the most fantasy pts to the WR position this year.
Curtis Samuel (ESPN 12% / Yahoo 18%)
Over the past two weeks, one without Funchess in the lineup and one with him in the lineup, Samuel is averaging an 87.5% snap share. That two-game stretch is the highest snap share for Samuel all season but his added time on the field is reaping rewards for fantasy owners. Since week 11 Samuels has seen 20 tgts, has 13 catches, for 160 yds, and 2 TDs and wk 14 the Panthers get the Browns.
Zay Jones (ESPN 1% / Yahoo 2%)
Say what you want about Jones coming out of college he has been producing as of late for the Bills and because he is attached to a low scoring offense you can get him for dirt cheap. Jones has 21 tgts, 12 catches, 160 yds, and 3 TDs over the past 3 weeks. With dates with the Jets & NE, Jones might be a sneaky plus matchup flex option this week and Week 16.
BONUS Guys To Look At
Dante Pettis (ESPN 2% / Yahoo 5%)
93% snap share, 20 tgts over past 3 weeks, 3 TDs over past two
Adam Humphries (ESPN 41% / Yahoo 50%)
63% snape share, 20 tgts, and 3 TDs since Jameis returned
Chris Conley (ESPN 13% / Yahoo 16%)
92% snap share, 7 tgts, 1 TD wk 13 w/ no Sammy Watkins
Ian Thomas (ESPN 1% / Yahoo 1%)
Thomas saw a 76% snap share in wk 13 vs TB after Olsen exited the game. We’ve been down this road before and it didn’t end pretty. I don’t blame you if you want to look elsewhere but Thomas is going to be the starting TE on a Panthers team who face the Browns (#10 vs TE) wk 14 and the Falcons (#18 vs TE) wk 16.
Mark Andrews (ESPN 1% / Yahoo 2%)
Andrews is quickly turning into one of Lamar Jackson’s favorite targets and his 40% snap share in wk 13 shows the team is trying to get him on the field more. The tgt volume is still low only 5 over the past 3 gms but he has been converting big plays when his number is called. If Andrews can get more snap share and Jackson is finally able to put together a solid passing outing, Andrews could be a big benefactor of those throws. With not much left in the TE pool, Andrews presents untapped upside with Jackson behind center.
Adam Shaheen (ESPN 0% / Yahoo 0%)
In his first game back since injuring his foot during the pre-season, Shaheen saw a healthy snap share 29% and was able to take 1 of his 2 tgts to the house! Shaheen was a high 2nd round pick last year and was the 4th TE selected in what might go down as the best TE class in the history of the NFL. With Trubisky looking like he will be able to go this week, Shaheen could be a sneaky good pick up for the playoff run!
