The Waiver Wire – Week 10
Week 9 brought the offense back into fantasy football even if Fournette was suspended and a few names from last week’s Waiver Wire article played huge roles in hopefully getting you a much needed W. The two tough bye weeks are behind us, the trading deadline which shook up some fantasy rosters with the moves of some big names and the playoffs are only a few weeks away for the majority of our readers. So whether you are gearing up for a championship run or simply trying to just make it into the playoffs, this article is a must-read for you!
Week 9 was fairly injury free but the big news heading into week 10 is Dez Bryant’s ankle & potential knee injury. He may miss week 10 depending on how it reacts this week. Jamison Winston & George Kittle (Only important because the 49ers are facing the Giants) have already been ruled out for week 10. The Bucs are going to rest Jameis so he can get his shoulder healed. To top off the week we are heading into the Zeke saga will continue this week as we may finally get a resolution. I have no idea what is going to happen but a Zeke suspension would be a death blow to his fantasy owners.
I can’t stress that this waiver wire is important but I am sure you already knew that. Week 10 has 4 teams on bye (Kansas City, Baltimore, Oakland, Philadelphia). We are going to be without the two top QB’s & TE’s this week.
a disclaimer, all players must be owned by less than 60% of ESPN or Yahoo leagues. Ownership percentages are in parenthesizes. Below I have ranked the top 3 adds at each position with a bonus player or two sprinkled in throughout.
Josh McCown (ESPN 36% / Yahoo 34%): McCown broke a streak of 4 straight games with multiple touchdown throws Thursday night but he has a great shot at starting a new streak as he faces the 30th ranked passing defense in the league the Tampa Bay Bucs. Tampa has been better as of late and is at home but McCown is still a great streaming option once again.
Andy Dalton (ESPN 42% / Yahoo 57%): Toss out last week because Dalton is a matchup-dependent starter in fantasy this year. It’s disappointing but that is where we are at in 2017. The Titans on the road is not a dream matchup but when you stop and consider they gave up a 2 touchdown performance to Joe Flacco last week things could be worse. In a shallow streaming pool, Dalton seems a safer play at least on paper.
Eli Manning (ESPN 48% / Yahoo 45%): I can’t believe I am putting Eli on this but the matchup dictates. A week after getting embarrassed by the Rams at home, Eli and company finally have a game they can win. SF is much worse at stopping the run then they are the pass but I still think Eli is a solid start especially when you factor in Drew Staton threw two touchdowns against them.
Bonus: Jimmy Garoppolo (ESPN 11% / Yahoo 13%): On the other side of that coin Jimmy G looks to be getting his first start as the new 49ers QB and what a better matchup than to face the New York Giants. The Giants are averaging over 300 passing yards per game over their last 3 games and just gave up 51 points to the Rams at home. They are far and away the worst defensive in the league at defending the pass and that makes me like my chances with Jimmy G aka the pretty one
Alfred Morris (ESPN 65% / Yahoo 58%): You may have already picked up Morris last week but with the Zeke suspension potentially happening any week, Morris has to be every Elliott owners #1 waiver claim option. What’s the worst that can happen, you don’t use him? That would be a good thing, wouldn’t it?!?
Matt Forte (ESPN 56% / Yahoo 42%): Forte’s performance on Thursday night needs to be filled in the I didn’t see that coming folder. An RB1 performance in week 9 and for an encore, he gets to face a Tampa Bay run defense that has allowed 141.3 yards per game over their last 3 games.
Kenyan Drake (ESPN 57% / Yahoo 53%) & Damien Williams (ESPN 23% / Yahoo 33%): Everyone was interested to see how the new look Dolphins backfield was going to perform 5 days after trading their star running back Jay Ajayi. Both did not disappoint against an ok rush defense in Oakland. Williams is the clear satellite back and continued his role as a change of pace back on third downs. Drake seem’s to have the best volume potential. Round 1 went to Williams who may have a safer floor with how bad the Dolphins run blocking unit is. Both look like they are going to get touches and are safe options to roster heading into the playoffs.
Bonus: Rex Burkhead (ESPN 8% / Yahoo 8%): Burkhead is once again a great streaming option this week as the Patriots head to Denver to face a Broncos team which has lost 4 straight and their once-vaunted run defense gave up 197 yards last week. Corey Clement who is on bye and is an ok option moving forward (3 headed dragon in Philly is going to be tough to predict weekly) gashed the Broncos with a 3 touchdown performance. I believe Burkhead has the size and skillset that gives the Broncos trouble and could be New Englands best RB on the road in Mile High.
Robert Woods (ESPN 26% / Yahoo 34%): Robert woods looked like he was shot out of a cannon on his 3rd & 31 screen pass touchdown that went for 52 yards. Woods later added another touchdown this time in the redzone to cap off a WR1 performance. Up next is Houston who has given up 279 yards per game over their past 3 games and is reeling after the loss of Deshaun Watson to a torn ACL late last week. Woods looks to keep rolling at home in a plus matchup, in the leagues best offense.
Marqise Lee (ESPN 34% / Yahoo 37%): Lee is seeing phenomenal volume and over the past 3 weeks. Blake Bortles has looked Lee’s way 28 times and over those same 3 games, Lee is averaging 76.6 yards per game. With matchups vs Arizona, Indy, Houston, and the 49ers still on the schedule Lee is a great addition to give you depth at the WR position for a sneaky spot start.
Marquise Goodwin (ESPN 9% / Yahoo 12%): The 49ers are a mess but the matchup vs the Giants is just too good to pass up, especially if Jimmy G get’s the start. The target volume has been great but the QB play has been awful. If Garoppollo starts I think Goodwin is a WR2 with WR1 upside…the Giants are that bad!
Bonus: Terrance Williams (ESPN 7% / Yahoo 10%): Williams went off against one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL but with the injury to Dez Bryant Williams is a name to remember as you monitor the Bryant injury this week. Names you also don’t want to forget about if Dez sits, Cole Beasley & Brice Butler.
Ed Dickson (ESPN 39% / Yahoo 39%): Dickson has been a disappointment since he broke out back in week 5 vs the Lions for 175 receiving performance. Since, he hasn’t been able to score over 4 points. The TE is a dumpster fire once again and with Kelce, Ertz, Watson, and Cook owners looking for help the matchup vs Miami makes Dickson a streaming option. Miami struggled to guard Cook Sunday night allowing him to go off for 126 yards and before that, they had allowed a TE to score in 2 straight weeks.
Eric Ebron (ESPN 23% / Yahoo 31%): Ebron has been a major disappointment this year but Cleveland has given up the 2nd most fantasy points to TE’s this season. The Lions are throwing the ball more times per game (44) than any other team in the NFL over the past 3 weeks and over that same period of time, the Lions are leading the NFL in passing yards (294.7). In a game, the Lions should control I like Ebron’s chances at home to get in the end zone and 30 to 40 yards.
Garrett Celek (ESPN 0% / Yahoo 0%): As I mentioned in the opening George Kittle has already been ruled out for week 10 and with a depleted depth chart at the TE position the 49ers will turn to Garrett Celek. Celek is from Michigan State and at 6’5 252 he has the size and speed (4.77 40) to be effective vs the terrible Giants secondary. The G-Men have given up a touchdown to a TE in every game this year. The only things that are certain are death, taxes, and the Giants giving up a touchdown to a tight end.
