The Waiver Wire “Playoff Edition” – Week 17
It all comes down to this, week 17! This is it, the final week of the NFL and the final week to the 2017 fantasy season. For all you week 17 warriors and two week ESPN finals participants like me, we have one last week to claim our league championship!
Week 17 championships are always a crap shoot as teams can lock up playoff seeding the week before and rest the fantasy studs that got you that far. This year things are tight in both conferences hopefully not allowing a fantasy championship to come down to a star player sitting after half or even not playing at all. The teams that still have something to play for this week are;
- NE and PIT (homefield advantage)
- BAL, TEN, LAC, BUF (playoff spot)
- NO, CAR (NFC South title)
- ATL, SEA (wild card)
But that means you have some teams who have nothing to play for in week 17. KC, JAX, PHI, and LAR all have locked up their divisions and can’t move their playoff seeding. With some huge names like Gurley, Hunt, Ertz Fournette, and Kelce on these teams, owners will have to look to the waiver wire to make plans to sit those stars in the event that they are not going to play.
We all know the challenges of a week 17 championship league when we sign up for them, so now it’s time to strap in and make the smart, savvy moves that leave your opponent in the dust. Let’s jump into this week’s top Waiver Wire adds!
Jimmy Garoppolo (ESPN 36% / Yahoo 29%): Jimmy GQ continues to impress as a 49er and was only the 2nd QB to put up a QB1 performance and score over 20 points vs the Jaguars vaunted defense. With back to back QB1 performances, Jimmy GQ looks to end the season hot winning all of his starts and putting on another performance vs a very good Ramas secondary. The Rams have shown they can be thrown on giving up 275 passing yards to Marcus Mariota who hadn’t thrown for over 250 yards since week 11. Fire up Jimmy G in your championship game!
Jameis Winston (ESPN 55% / Yahoo 54%): Mr. Crablegs has been on fire these past few games and threw for over 300 yards on Sunday for the 1st time since returning from injury back in week 13. I’m sure Jameis is looking for revenge after he was unable to finish the last time these two teams met back in week 6. The Saints secondary is much improved but they just gave up 288 yards to Matt Ryan last week at home. The concern with Winson is always ball security either throwing or running but the passing volume should make up for any mistakes he may make. Winston is a back-end QB1 for week 17.
Joe Flacco (ESPN 13% / Yahoo 21%): Joey Flock of Seagulls was a QB1 last week and has now thrown multiple touchdown passes in 3 of his past 4 games. That’s two straight QB1 performances from Mr. Playoffs and with a home game left with playoff implication on the line, I think Joe Cool is once again in the running for another QB1 performance. Prior to last week, the Bengals had given up two straight QB1 performances but unlike last week this game is on the road. On the road, the Bengals are giving up 355.7 total yards p/g & 233.7 passing y/g. Look for Flacco to air it out early and often.
Giovani Bernard (ESPN 49% / Yahoo 45%): It’s GIO time babee! The Gio train just keeps trucking along and he is looking like the best RB in Cincinnati right now. With a 92% snap share last week even with Mixon active it looks like the coaching staff will ride out the rest of the season with Gio as their primary back. Gio delivered his first 100-yard rushing game of the season and has now scored in back to back weeks and was your RB3 for wk16! With not much to play for the Bengals can play spoiler Sunday vs a Ravens team who is looking for a wild-card berth with a win. I think Gio once again see’s a heavy workload and finds the endzone.
Tion Green (ESPN 1% / Yahoo 5%): Green is once again seeing snaps over Abdullah and had more carries then both. Green is a touchdown dependent play but should see plenty of opportunities as the Lions fight for a playoff spot at home vs a GB defense that is giving up 377.1 total ypg on the road this season.
Mike Gillislee (ESPN 26% / Yahoo 31%): When you look up touchdown dependent fantasy value in the dictionary this guys photo has to show up! Gillislee is a major boom or bust play as he is only being utilized as goalline specialist and his only fantasy value is being to convert those opportunities into touchdowns. If White sits again, Gillislee should be in line with a similar workload and a goalline carry or two.
Keelan Cole (ESPN 32% / Yahoo 52%): Cole saw a 97% snap share and saw 13 targets in the loss to the 49ers. Cole is a must start as he is averaging 131 receiving yards over his last 3 games and has 25 targets over his past 3 games. The Jags week 17 opponent the Titans are giving up the 10th most fantasy points to WRs 22.02 p/g. Trust me you wanted to get Cole this Christmas!
Josh Doctson (ESPN 36% / Yahoo 36%): Doctson is the clear #1 outside option in a Redskins offense that is forcing the ball his way to end out the year. Last week he had 13 targets (only caught 2 YUCK but one was for a TD!) his high for the season and faces a Giants secondary that will be without Jenoris Jenkins. The same secondary Doctson 2/28/1 back in week 12. This is a volume play as the efficiency is just not there yet.
Chris Godwin (ESPN 1% / Yahoo 1%): In the same week Corey Davis kinda of broke out so didn’t another rookie WR and that is Chris GODwin! Godwin saw 6 targets and played on 98% of Tampa Bays offensive snaps as Jackson was sidelined with an injury. With nothing to play for TB might want to see what they have in the Rookie WR and play him over Jackson to give him more time to heal. NO’s has a great secondary but Winston has been asked to throw a lot since he came back and garbage time points seem to be a lock for Tampa Bay WRs.
Eric Ebron (ESPN 43% / Yahoo 57%): Big E has been balling these past weeks with back to back TE1 performances and was your overall TE1 for week 16. Ebron has scored in back to back games and faces a GB secondary that has allowed 4 TDs to TEs over their past 4 games. Ebron is the top streaming option TE in week 17.
Antonio Gates (ESPN 17% / Yahoo 22%): With Hunter Henry Gates saw an 80% snap share his highest of the season and was able to convert that playing time into 8 targets / 6 receptions / 83 yards / 1 TD. That gives Gates back to back week with a TD and the Chargers are in a must win at home vs an Oakland secondary that has improved but did just give up 81 yards to Ertz on Monday Night. Gates is a great streaming option to end your season. It also might be the last game of Gates career. He will want to go out on a high note.
Vernon Davis (ESPN 60% / Yahoo 48%): Davis has been all over the place as far as production goes as the Redskins #1 TE option. The target volume has been low only 8 over the past two weeks but the snap share is still high (blocking purposes) 100% for the 2nd straight week. Redskins have nothing to play for but neither do the Giants who still are giving up the most fantasy points to TEs this year. In three straight games, they have given up a touchdown!
