The Waiver Wire – Week 9

Welcome back my Fantasy Brock Osweiler’s, Ryan Leaf’s, Dan Orlovsky’s, and Johnny Manzels! Halloween is here and with it, we kick off week 9 of my weekly waiver wire article. The scare is very much in the air as 6 more teams (Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota, New England, Pittsburgh) are once again on a bye in a do or die must have it fantasy week for all the fantasy owners still fighting for a playoff berth. I can’t believe we only have 5 more weeks left but with Brady, Big Ben, AB, Bell, Rivers, Allen, Gordon, Henry, Gronk, Cook, Hogan, Howard, McKinnon, Rudolph, Diggs, Theilen, and our new love JuJu all on our bench this week the waiver wire is going to play a HUGE role in helping you get a win!

Let’s go trick and treating on the waiver wire and hope we get nothing but Skittles, Kit Kats, Twix, Snickers, and Twizzlers in our pillow case and no Tootsie Rolls, Almond Joys, Neco Wafers or Dots! Let’s not waste any more time and dive right into this week’s top waiver wire adds!

As a disclaimer, all players must be owned in less than 60% of ESPN or Yahoo leagues. Ownership percentages are in parenthesizes. Below I have ranked the top 3 adds at each position with a bonus player or two sprinkled in throughout.

QB

Jared Goff (ESPN 26% / Yahoo 47%) – Goff has all the making of being a treat this week as the Rams are all rested after taking week 8 off and have a plus matchup on the road vs the struggling GMEN. Goff has been a streamable play in plus matchups this season with fantasy scores of 19, 23, 18, and 18 just back in week 7. The Giants have given up 315 yards per game over their past 3 games ranking 31st in the NFL during that time. Goff is the top streaming option in a week without Brady, Rivers, and Big Ben.

Josh McCown (ESPN 26% / Yahoo 25%) – I think Josh McCown has been on our list every week and last week I wrote him up saying he just keeps producing and you had to take notice. Well, guess what? He produced again Sunday! Now in a short week, McCown gets a home matchup vs the Jets AFC East rival the Buffalo Bills, a Bills team who has given up the 338 passing yards per game over their past 3. McCown is going to have a turnover or two but feels like a lock for 300+ yards & 2 touchdowns.

Jacoby Brissett  (ESPN 11% / Yahoo 10%) – The Brissett similar to McCown is once again finding his name on the world famous Waiver Wire. Brissett looked good on the road vs a Bengals team which many thought would wipe the floor with him. On the road once again Houston is not the terrifying defense their name once carried with it. The Houston secondary is coming off another performance that saw Wilson shred them for 452 yards and 4 touchdowns. Brissett is no Russell Wilson but what may end up being an AFC South shootout, Jacoby should be able to get his second 300 yard game of the season.

RB

Alex Collins  (ESPN 32% / Yahoo 34%) – The entire Baltimore performance and turd dropping by the Miami Dolphins was a complete shock but what came out of it was the fantasy emergence of Alex Collins. Boy oh boy Seattle what were you thinking letting him go? Collins looked like he was fired out of a cannon all game long against a top 10 rushing defense that was only giving up just under 100 y/pg coming into the game. Collins gashed them for 113 yards on his own and is now the clear #1 RB in Baltimore. Not a great run blocking unit but in a position of need this late in the season, Collins is as good a waiver wire pick up you can get. Collins is a plus matchup RB3 w/ upside and a decent flex bye week streaming option vs the Titans.

Orleans Darkwa  (ESPN 39% / Yahoo 47%) – Darkwa has a plus matchup out of the bye against a Rams defense that is giving up 123 y/pg on the ground. Now the Rams have been playing the run much better of late but I think the volume mixed with home field gives Darkwa flex appeal this week for bye week needy teams or deeper leagues. Darkwa like Burkhead below is in the dreaded RBBC but he has goalline upside.

Rex Burkhead  (ESPN 8% / Yahoo 8%) – Sexy Rexy is back and boy did he look good on Sunday. I mean where was Gillislee? I’ll tell you where on the bench! Burkhead out snapped Gillislee 27 to 13 and was the much more effective runner of the two. Now healthy, it looks like it’s going to be Burkhead, not Gillislee filing the Blount role and just in time for them to make the move during the bye week. Grab Burkhead in all the leagues you can and wait and see. The worst that can happen is he is part of an RBBC on the best offense but the best case scenario is he is the primary back for a Tom Brady run offense who is also a dual threat out of the backfield! Wheels up for Sexy Rexy!

Bonus Don’t forget about me: Danny Woodhead (ESPN 22% / Yahoo 17%) – Just a friendly reminder that Danny Woodhead is eligible to come back week 11. Baltimore has a week 10 bye so keep an eye on his practice reps as we inch closer.

WR

JuJu Smith-Schuster (ESPN 29% / Yahoo 49%) – #TeamStartJuJu was blowing Twitter up after last nights 97-yard touchdown catch and run. I mean what can you say the kid took the opportunity that was given to him and blew up! JuJu who was averaging 9.80 FPPG (Standard) going into the game finished with 28.80 Pts with his 7/193/1 performance. What is exciting and makes JuJu the top target this week if you’re not in a positional bind is he tied for the team lead in targets with 10. Martavius is not going to just come back and be the #2 WR after that performance so if you drafted Bryant for his upside then you have to consider that for JuJu moving forward. He is an every week starter if he can continue to see that level of target volume even when Bryant is active. #GoPickUpJuJu!

Robby Anderson (ESPN 26% / Yahoo 28%) – All Robby Anderson does is catch touchdowns and from Josh McCown none the less (GOD, why did Quincy Enuwa, have to get hurt!). Now scoring in back to back weeks Anderson has another opportunity to stretch that streak to 3 with a Thursday night matchup vs the Bills who I already explained are vulnerable against the pass in my write up on McCown. I think Anderson has stream potential this week and is someone who can be a situational start if you face injuries or byes as we head towards the playoffs.

Paul Richardson (ESPN 10% / Yahoo 31%) – Play much bigger than you are Paul Richardson finally burst onto the national scene with his 6/105/2 performance in the shootout vs Houston. By far Richardson’s best game as a pro shows the ceiling he has and what excited fantasy owners his rookie year before he got hurt. Now healthy and the Seahawks passing game clicking, Richardson is making the most of when his number is being called. Richardson is the 4th option in the passing game so he is going to come with volatility but is a great stash in case of an injury to Lockett, Baldwin or Graham which would catapult Richardson back into the WR3/4 conversation.

Bonus Don’t forget about me: Corey Davis (ESPN 24% / Yahoo 27%) & Dede Westbrook  (ESPN 2%/ Yahoo 10%) – ALERT ALERT These two Monsters need to be on your fantasy lineup! Waste a waiver claim on Corey Davis because once he see’s the field he is going to blow up! Mariota owners (Hand Raised) can’t wait to see just how good this offense can be once he is on the field. As for Dede, he is on pace to return this week. The Jaguars are depleted at WR and will allow Westbrook to immediately move right into the slot but who knows. He like JuJu can play outside and he might threaten Hurns for the #2 WR position as the season progresses. I like DeDe a lot and think he is worth stashing even on a bad passing offense like the Jaguars.

TE

Jack Doyle  (ESPN 39% / Yahoo 50%) – What did I tell you, O’Doyle Rules! Just go pick this guy up already. Yahoo! is listening but the WTF ESPN what are you doing? Jack Doyle is your 7th ranked TE at the week 9 mark. Now, the TE position is a dumpster fire but at least he can find the end zone (2 TD’s over his last 3 gms) and now has seen 32 targets over the last 3 weeks. I love the volume and you know Indy is going to be in a negative game script in every game so you can count on garbage time production. Doyle is a great stream option this week vs Houston for Gronk, Henry, and Rudolph owners.

Austin Hooper  (ESPN 39% / Yahoo 47%) – One week the Falcons love him and the next they seem to hate him. Against Miami 9 targets, vs NE 1, and last week vs NYJ 6. Carolina has played the TE well but if the Falcons continue to feed Hooper he has a great floor to help you through the week 9 TE byes. Hooper is currently your TE10 on the season and holds decent season-long value with 3 home games (wk 12-14) and 1 other game in a dome (wk 16 vs NO) left on his schedule.

Charles Clay  (ESPN 25% / Yahoo 14%) – Clay is not going to be able to suit up this week vs NYJ because of the short week but with Buffalo clicking on all cylinders his week 10 return is going to give the TE position as a whole a huge injection of talent. I recommend going and grabbing Clay this week as your league mates will have most likely forgotten about him. With two games still against New England and a plus matchup against the Colts (wk 14!) Clay brings tremendous value and stability.
