Week 9 Waiver Wire

Winston

By Josh Trotta

@TFFGurus

“We lost some good men out there” is an understatement after the hell that fantasy owners just went through in week 8. Win or lose, this week saw the landscape of fantasy leagues across the world shift drastically with injuries to fantasy’s biggest stars. This past week saw fantasy owners lose Bell, Allen, Smith Sr., Khiry Robinson and Reggie Bush all to season ending injuries. We then saw Megatron, Forte and a slew of other players get nicked up which could cause them to miss some time.  It also saw the end of the Randle era in Dallas, making last weeks number #1 waiver pickup McFadden even more valuable. Also we saw a trade WHICH never happens in the NFL at the trading deadline sending Vernon Davis to Denver. Intrigued? ya so am I. Peyton almost always makes a superstar out of his TE. Now I know what your going to say, Josh why is Winston your pick for the photo this week? Well I am a big FSU fan and since he is playing much better and has real fantasy value, it look like the best time for me to get his mug on our website. Ya I pulled the homer card! We all know who the number 1 waiver guy is this week but who are the other gems that could be sitting out there? Week 9 see’s 6 teams on a bye this week, the most so far this season. This week the Ravens, Lions, Cardinals, Texans, Chiefs and Seahawks are all taking the week off.

We will rank three players at each position in order of who we think you should try and grab first. Look at the position you need the most help in and best of luck getting your player!

Quarterbacks

  1. Derek Carr – Carr is in beast mode right now coming off back to back multiple touchdown games and more then 275 yards passing in both. Carr was overshadowed by the shootout in New Orleans but against the NFL’s top defense he shredded them to the tune of 333 yards, 4 touchdowns and no interceptions. Carr is for real and with that week AFC West, look for him to thrive down the stretch. With games against Detroit, Kansas City and San Diego still ahead.
  2. Jay Cutler – Cutler has been great since coming back from his injury. Jeffries is back and healthy and you are starting to see the Bears offense come to life. This week they get the Chargers who have been dreadful against the pass the past couple of weeks. You can’t do much better then Cutler on Monday night for a bye week fill in.
  3. Jameis Winston – Famous Jameis looks more and more like the right pick at #1 as each week passes. Winston again had a great game against a 1 loss team on the road Sunday and lead his team to the victory. Fantasy wise he is going to get all of his weapons back soon and fantasy owners could start to see the dividends from it. The Giants defense just let up 7 touchdown passes, soo you couldn’t ask for a better opponent to put some big fantasy numbers on if your a Winston, Evans, Jackson or ASJ owner.

Running Backs

  1. DeAngelo Williams – By far the #1 waiver wire player of week 9, Williams will once again be asked to take over the lead running back role in Pittsburgh. Bell has been placed on the IR after a gruesome knee injury and Williams came in and put up 77 yards on 9 carries. Williams was a beast during Bell’s 2 game suspension to start the year, rushing for 204 yards, 3 touchdowns on 41 carries. There is no reason to not think he can return to RB1 status now that he is the main man in Pittsburgh. If you have the number 1 claim you should be grabbing Williams, either to play or as a trade piece.
  2. Jeremy Langford – With the MCL sprain to Forte, Langford will be handed the starting duty until he is able to return. The bears are hoping Forte is only out 2 games but knee injuries are hard to predict and he should be looked at in all fantasy formats. With SD up next, Langford has the perfect opponent to showcase his talents and make every forte fantasy owner happy if they were able to grab Langford either this week or in weeks past as his handcuff. Should be a great start this week if your in bye week hell as well.
  3. Dexter McCluster – Not an every week guy for your team but if your dealing with multiple byes to your running backs and you need a fill in player, McCluster is not a bad option. In a wide open backfield, McCluster has been given the opportunties to produce and where he is succeeding the most is the area the Saints have struggled the most with against RB’s, threw the air. Vereen had a good game catching the ball last week and got in the endzone. This week the Titans travel to NO and with the return of Mariota, McCluster could be used early and often as a passing threat. This one could be a shootout again (maybe not 13 touchdowns worth) allowing DM to be a nice fill in this week.

Wide Receivers

  1. Kamar Aiken – With Steve Smith Sr. going down Kamar Aiken fills the role he left after Smith Sr. was lost for the season with an achilles tear. Aiken should see number 1 duties the rest of the way and after the bye the Ravens are going to need to win out to have any shot at making the playoffs. All Steve Smith Sr. owners should be eyeing Aiken as there number 1 target this week. Aiken has been productive when called upon raking up 62 yards on 6 catches last week.
  2. Stevie Johnson / Malcolm Floyd – A two for one special here. Basically grab the guy that is available in your league. As a fellow Keenan Allen owner I am placing a waiver claim in for Stevie Johnson. I would prefer Floyd but he is already taken in my leagues. Johnson has been listed in Allen’s spot on the Chargers official website but both should see an uptick in production in Allen’s absence. It also doesn’t hurt that the Chargers have a really easy fantasy schedule the rest of the way. Go Chargers Go! It starts this week against the awful Bears Secondary on Monday Night.
  3. Nate Washington – If you are not paying attention to the Texans and I can’t blame you if your not, then you might have not noticed that Nate Washington has put up back to back monster fantasy games. A week after a 9 catch/127 yard/ 2 touchdown performance on 16 TARGETS, Nate the great followed it up with 4 catches / 74 yards and a touchdown on a healthy 6 targets. Washington is the clear number 2 in Houston who after the Colts loss last night find them selves tied for the lead in the AFC South. The South is awful and look for teams to focus mostly on Hopkins leaving Washington room to flourish on bad teams. Not a bad stash when he isn’t on many peoples radar because of the team he plays on and the fact that the Texans are on a bye.

Tight Ends

  1. Vernon Davis – Ok I admit it I am all in on Davis in Denver. I am a sucker for Peyton Manning run teams tight ends. The list of great fantasy players is long and Davis has just as much talent as all of them, if not more. In San Francisco, Vernon Davis looked like he was just going through the motions but today he woke up and he is now on a title contending team. If this move can wake him from the slumber he has been in the past two seasons, Davis could be a game changer at the TE position as the fantasy playoffs approach.
  2. Jacob Tamme – This isn’t the first time Tamme’s name has come up on my list but you can’t ignore what he was able to do last week against Tampa Bay. Tamme was the man on Sunday posting 10 catches, 103 yards and 1 touchdown on 12 targets! Tamme is the number 1 TE in Atalanta and with a bad NFC South to go up against down the stretch look for Tamme to continue to deliver solid fantasy performances.
  3. Heath Miller – Miller like Tamme saw a huge increase in targets last week. With the return of Big Ben, Miller once again became a fixture in the offensive scheme. Targeted 13 times Miller was able to put up over 100 yards on 10 catches against a great Bengals defense. The one draw back similar to Witten in Dallas is that Miller never can find the endzone. He only has 1 touchdown on the season but if your just looking for a guy to fill in this week, then you could do much worse then Miller. The Steelers go up against the Raiders who just so happen to give up the most fantasy points to TE’s on the season.

Defenses

  1. Cincinnati – Coming off an emotional victory against their division foe the Steelers and looking to stay perfect the Bengals are sure to come out flying on Thursday night. Oh and they get Johnny Manzel on primetime. It looks like a recipe that could spell disaster for the Browns. Look for the Bengals to have a big game Thursday and are a perfect waiver wire defense to help you get through the bye week.
  2. Atlanta – Lost to a division rival last week are playing in sudo primetime and did I mention it’s the start of the Blaine Gabbert era in San Francisco? This has the makings for a historic defense scoring game, the likes we have not seen since the Seahawks put up 40+ against the Cardinals a few years back.
  3. New Orleans – I know this defense just got ripped to pieces for like 1k yards and 6 touchdowns last Sunday but in rolls the Titans and they just gave Houston Texans owners a 20 spot last week. Do I think they will do the same this week, no but even with Mariota back there the Saints should be able to cause a few TO’s and sacks to give you a respectable start out of your defense.

Kickers

  1. Robbie Gould – Monday night could be the highest scoring game of the weekend and Gould should have his chances to kick FG’s. Look for a good night from Gould Monday and he should be able to better his predicted amount.
  2. Sebastian Janikowski – The best kicker to come out of Florida State has put up back to back 13 point games from the kicking position. The once number 1 kicker in fantasy is starting to heat up and could see another double digit game this weekend in Pittsburgh.
  3. Nick Folk – He should be starting for you each and every week. Folk was at it again on Sunday having another solid performance even with the Jets getting blown out in Oakland. This week the Jaguars roll into town and it should lead to plenty of FG opportunities for Folk.

Good luck this week and I will see you next Tuesday! If you ever have any fantasy questions hit us up @TFFGurus or our friends at @dafantasyfather & @TheFantasyBoys.
